Autoimmune diseases

Our immune system is constantly working and warding off foreign invaders that may cause possible infections or diseases. They protect and keep our body healthy. On rare occasions, the immune system runs haywire in some individuals. It identifies the body itself as foreign thus attacking and destroying the healthy body by mistake. This self-attack is referred to as an ‘Autoimmune Reaction’. There are more than 80 types of autoimmune disorders; for example, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriasis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Multiple Sclerosis, Bronchial Asthma, Irritable Bowel Syndrome etc.

What causes it?

No one knows the exact cause of autoimmune disorders. One school of thought suggests that some microorganisms such as bacteria or viruses or certain drugs may trigger changes that confuse the immune system. This may instigate the immune system to run amok and in turn cause the many autoimmune reactions.

Who are at risk?

Autoimmune diseases can affect anyone at any given time but some people seem more prone to it than others:

  • Women of childbearing age
  • Hereditary: If there were cases of autoimmune diseases in the family.
  • External factors: Certain events or environmental exposures may cause some autoimmune diseases, or make them worse. Like sunlight, chemicals called solvents, viral and bacterial infections.
  • Some types of autoimmune diseases affect people of certain races or ethnic backgrounds more than others.
